British man found to be carrying polio strain in his gut for decades

A 29-year-old Briton who received polio drops as an infant has been found to have carried a mutated strain of polio virus in his gut for almost all his life!

The man who suffers from an auto-immune disorder has been shedding highly contagious forms of the strain for nearly three decades now without showing any symptoms of the virus himself.

The man in question, who has not been named, was given the usual course of oral polio vaccine at the age of 5, 7 and then 12 months, together with a booster at 7.

Due to his disorder that weakened his immune system, his body was unable to destroy the virus. It continued to stay on in his gut and was passed out in his stool too.

Over 100 samples taken over a 20 year period have confirmed the presence of significant levels of a mutated version of the deadly virus.

The virulent strain was found to be potent enough to paralyze a mouse but ineffective when tested on blood of vaccinated human beings.

This case”represents by far the longest period of excretion” known from “the only identified individual known to be excreting highly evolved vaccine-derived polio virus,” write the researchers.

Sewage samples taken from random countries like Finland and Israel suggest that there might be other people carrying the virus like him.

Scientists have warned that other similar patients with a suppressed immune system who might be shedding vaccine-derived polio virus could potentially cause a fresh outbreak of the deadly, crippling disease at a time when the entire world is working hard to wipe it out from the surface of our planet.
