Rivers all over the world are getting affected by the rising pollution and pollution is obviously being caused by the humans themselves. According to the new study. the rivers are contaminated by antibiotics on a large scale. Recently, a global team of scientists gathered and studied the rising levels of antibiotics in the rivers all around the world. The study was led by the University of York and they found that the antibiotics have exceeded the safe level by 300 time which is a lot to be compared with the normal level.
The Thames which is a well-known river was contaminated with five antibiotics which included, ciprofloxacin which is used to treat skin and urinary tract infections that were three times what is considered safe. The researcher took samples from different rivers through 72 countries and found 14 antibiotics which are generally used in rivers and all the samples of antibiotics were found in two-thirds of samples. According to scientists, the antibiotics in the rivers can increase the tolerance of the bacterias present in the rivers and will no longer react to the medicines used by humans. As per UN calculations, this can lead to the death of more than 10 million people by 2050. Professor William Gaze, a microbial ecologist at the University of Exeter told Guardians, “A lot of the resistance genes we see in human pathogens originated from environmental bacteria.”
Such antibiotic drugs get into the river by the wastes of humans and animals and the wastage leak from wastewater treatment and drug manufacturing sources. A river in Bangladesh was filled with a drug called metronidazole which is used to treat mouth and skin infections were 300 times greater than what is considered safe. The most common antibiotic drug which was found in the rivers was trimethoprim as it was present in 307 sites out of 711 sites which were tested for the levels of antibiotics.
