The famous theoretical physicist, cosmologist Stephen Hawking has once again warned the world about the ill-effects of Artificial Intelligence (AI), if not utilized properly. Hawking appeared on-stage at Web Summit in Lisbon, Portugal on Monday via telepresence. In his speech, he made people aware of the harmful effects of advanced AI on humans.

Hawking said in his signature computer-generated voice that AI could develop a will of its own and the rise of AI could be the worst or the best thing that has happened to the humanity. He told that the emergence of AI could be the worst event in the history of Human civilization unless society finds a way to control its development.

According to him, success in creating effective AI could be the biggest event in the history of our civilization or could be the worst one. No one knows what would happen in future. So it is uncertain that if we would be infinitely benefitted by AI, or ignored by it and side-lined, or conceivably get destroyed by it. He further explained that unless we learn how to prepare for it and avoid the potential risks, AI could be the worst event in the history of our civilization. AI may possess many dangers like powerful autonomous weapons or new ways for the few to oppress many. It also could bring great instability to our economy.

Hawking also informed that to avoid the potential threats of AI, the creators of AI should focus on employing best practice and effective management. Also, Hawking stressed on making new and effective laws for AI and robotics. Hawking suggested that we all need to stop for a moment and focus not only on making our AI better and more successful but also on the benefit of humanity.

So, to round up, what Hawking wanted to say is that there is no harm in developing AI, but the main thing is that we need be well prepared for its consequences in advance. A little bit of negligence and lead to our own destruction. Stephen Hawking is not the first person to tell us about the dangerous effect of AI. SpaceX boss Elon Musk also said recently that AI could cause a third world war and he further proposed that humans must merge with machines in order to remain relevant in the future.
