Mysteries associated with the Great Pyramid of Giza has always excited researchers and archaeologists. In a remarkable find, researchers have found a mysterious void inside the Great Pyramid. This is a first of its kind discovery in almost two centuries. The researchers hope that the discovery will help them solve the mystery of how an ancient civilization constructed this majestic monument almost 4,500 years ago.
The researchers found out the 30-meter long empty space hidden within the pyramid’s limestone and granite walls by showering subatomic particles. Yes, the international group of scientists used a modern physics technique equivalent to X-ray technique that allowed them to track particles called muons, which come from cosmic rays striking atoms in the upper atmosphere. Once the particles fall and pass through different materials, they lose energy and hence slow down and get decayed.
Hence, the scientists passed these muons through the interiors of the massive pyramid and finally found the massive void inside it. Actually, muons get partially absorbed by stones, so they get deposited in vast amounts inside the large holes. So when detectors were placed inside the Queen’s Chamber of the pyramid, researchers found out an unexpectedly large number muons passing through. This indicated the presence of a mysterious void above the chamber. But scientists are still unclear about the characteristics of the void. The empty space could be horizontal or sloped like the grand gallery, and no one knows what is inside it. Researchers and archaeologists are not allowed to use intrusive techniques like drilling holes and installing cameras inside the Great Pyramid as this would damage the pyramid.
Study co-author Mehdi Tayoubi from the Heritage, Innovation, and Preservation Institute said that they are pretty sure about the presence of the big void which was not expected by any kind of theory. He also said the big void is not made out of any decay or constructional accident, but it was intentionally built. The Great Pyramid of Giza was built for the pharaoh Khufu between 2509 and 2483 BCE and is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The great pyramid contains three rooms the King’s chamber, a smaller Queen’s chamber and a passageway called the Grand Gallery
