Wind energy is one of the cleanest forms of energy, but its installation and cost of production are a lit bit high. But now a new research has revealed that the wind energy available above the oceans and near the seashores is sufficient enough to power the human civilization. But for that, we need to cover huge stretches of the sea with turbines and come up with innovative ways to install and maintain them in the so-called extreme ocean environments.
Also, the research indicated that building out open ocean turbines on a large scale in such type of adverse conditions is not an easy task and this could also hamper the climate of the planet. But the main thing is that wind energy over the open oceans has huge potential, and this could encourage the idea of building floating wind farms over very deep waters. If we talk about advanced wind energy technology this recent research regarding potential wind energy over the ocean needs to be explored more and more.
Ken Caldeira of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Stanford, California said that the new research is a kind of green light for the wind energy industry from a geophysical point of view. The study explained that there is an upper limit to the amount of energy generated from wind turbines operating on land. This limit occurs because the presence of both natural and human structures on land creates friction which eventually slows down the wind speed. Actually, according to the recent modelings, land turbines would probably provide only 1 watt per square meter, when installed at scale.
The main reason behind is that turbines deplete the strength of winds downstream from them thus creating a phenomenon called ‘wind shadow’ which has a huge impact on land turbines. Caldeira then added that if each turbine removes something like half the energy flowing through it, by the time you get to the second row, you’ve only got a quarter of the energy, and so on. Researchers also revealed that floating wind turbines at sea could create up to three times as much electricity as turbines present on land. Clearly, if this research is carried further then, we can definitely increase the energy potential and eventually power the whole civilization.
